This was an extremely fun take on the Little Mermaid fairy tale. I appreciated the descriptions of the mermaids vs the sirens, as well as the worldbuilding. (Minor spoilers ahead) Perhaps this is the case with most current YA romantasy, but the romance ended up feeling a bit forced. I appreciated that they were enemies for most of the book, and enemies-to-lovers is a favored trope, but their romance ended up feeling like a need to fulfill that trope instead of a natural progression. Friendship would have made more sense in this case, but I may be biased, because I love a good friendship. The crew of the Saad were all very fun and interesting; side characters taking the limelight is a common and beloved aspect of fantasy. Overall, this book was a fun read and a great take on the classic story. Good banter, good characters.
